You were probably taught how to swaddle your baby while in the hospital. If you were like me though, there is a good chance that your attention was on someone else. Since becoming a new dad I’ve learned that swaddling is a great way to keep baby calm and cozy. It can also help prevent their own startle reflexes from disturbing them.
How to Swaddle a Baby
Spread a large blanket on a bed or flat surface. The blanket does not have to be huge, but larger then the average receiving blanket. There are swaddling blankets available that are light weight and stretchy for easier usage. Fold one of the corners down by about 6 inches.- Place your baby on the blanket with their head just above the folded corner.
- Take the top left corner and wrap it around your baby’s body. Tuck the corner under the baby’s arm and back trapping their arm.
- Bring up the bottom corner and tuck it under your baby’s chin. Don’t pull too tight or you’ll fold her in half.
- Fold the remaining corner over the body trapping the other arm and tuck it under their back once again.
- Congratulations, you now have a pig in a blanket.
Quick tip: Once your baby is older you can tuck the blanket under their arms to give them more freedom.
