New Dad Diaper Changing

There is probably nothing that freaks out a new dad quite like the first attempt at changing a poopy diaper. The new dad is forced to rely on the bits and pieces he has picked up along the way. You can try to put it off but sooner or later it will be up to you to roll up your sleeves and go elbow deep into the unknown. This guide is for the new dad like me who has never changed a diaper.

If you find yourself alone with a dirty diaper and a grouchy baby use the following guide to make the best out of your crappy situation…. hah!

Dad’s Guide to Diaper Changing

  1. How long until your spouse comes home? If your baby isn’t showing much discomfort and your spouse will be home shortly you can consider waiting for her. When you are asked “Why didn’t you change the diaper?”, you can respond “I didn’t think she was finished” or “I didn’t even know she needed changing.” Chances are you will have to change the diaper anyway, but at least you’ll have her assistance. Don’t use this excuse all the time as women are smart creatures and will catch onto your little scheme.
  2. Survey the scene. Just as thunder does not always mean rain, smell does not always mean damage. Sorry guys, but the best way to tell is with a visual inspection; just like a 7 year old peaking at a Christmas present you’ll need to see if there is anything hiding in the diaper. Hopefully this is the case because simply put, if you can see the damage on the outside the inside is about 10 times worse.
  3. Set up your workspace before cracking the diaper. Get the clean diaper and wipes ready before opening the diaper. Flailing feet can cause collateral damage very quickly with a diaper left open!
  4. Give the privates fresh air. This is very important for boys especially. When fresh air hits the privates it can cause babies to pee, so give em a shot of fresh air and close the diaper. I don’t need to explain why this could be a problem.
  5. Use a fist full of wipes to clean up the mess. Make sure to get into every nook and cranny. I usually pile the wipes on the dirty diaper to roll together and dispose of after.
  6. Quickly throw on the fresh diaper. Apply any powder or cream needed.
  7. Pat yourself on the back (Wash your hands!) and never brag about your success. If your wife finds out how easy it was to change a diaper, you’ll find yourself the go to guy for dirty diapers!
