As a parent, we’ve all experienced it. You buy a toy for your child only to have it pushed aside for the box it came in. Or you buy the latest in baby toy technology and have it become a weapon to beat the cat with. Luckily, there are toys that are usually a guaranteed hit. Below are 5 toys that have received the CleverFather’s stamp of approval.

Sophie the Giraffe Teether
I don’t know why, but every kid I’ve seen absolutely loves Sophie. If you don’t know, Sophie is a teething toy made from natural rubber in the French Alps. The soft, rubbery skin is easy to grab and a delight to chew on. (or so I’ve heard.) We’ve noticed that Little Miss tends to jam Sophie’s legs too far into her mouth and ends up gagging herself. While steep in price ($22 CAN for a squeaky toy!) it is worth every penny.

Ring Stacker
Could be considered a staple toy as I bet everyone has bought a set for someones child at some point. This simple toy is great for developing the motor skills used for grasping and switching between hands. We’ve noticed with Little Miss that she’ll balance the rings on her thumb and stare in awe. Hey, whatever floats her boat!

Busy Ball Popper
It’s loud and shoots balls – what more could a baby want? This nifty device uses air to shoot little plastic balls into the air that land in the funnel and circles through again. I’ll admit, this is one of the coolest toys I’ve seen in a while. The one downside is that the balls don’t always land in the funnel so be prepared to chase them around if your little one isn’t mobile yet.

Baby Play Gym
If we had to pick one toy that has seen the most use since Little Miss was born, this is it. We found it so useful that it was the first thing we bought our friends once their little guy was born. These things come in a variety of colors and blingatude. Comes in handy once they’re old enough to start grabbing at object. Just plunk them down under the play gym and enjoy.

Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium
Not so much a toy, but it is still worthy of mentioning. The soothing sounds and colors will help your little one drift off to sleep. We have the one with a remote and it’s saved our butts a few times allowing us to turn it on from the hallway. Very hand at 2am in the morning!
Bonus toy: Plastic lid!
At seven months old, Little Miss is finally starting to take a real interest in toys or just about anything she can get a hold of. Now the fun begins as I get to play with all the awesome toys available these days. Fatherhood has its perks!
What toy can’t your little monster live without?

Hmm, that’s a good question. Seems to change monthly, and right now my son loves his chubby lightning mcqueen car. i remember for a while he just loved getting in to my kitchen and being fascinated with the turkey baster!
Good point,
Little Miss’s newest kick is the lid off of her bottle. She’ll pick through her pile of toys if she spots one.
I was all set to just tell you that we have several of those toys, and my kids especially love that ball popper…then I saw the lid picture. I wish there were a way I could attach a picture to a comment…I have nearly an identical picture of my kids with the same type of lid even!!
Our neighbor’s 7-month-old is the apple of our eye. Recently we saw this little item at a kid store that’s basically a square about 3 or 4 inches square, and it’s a piece of something like stiff cellophane with pink fabric sewn over it. When you grab it, it has a nice crisp crackly sound, like crunching a piece of paper, only the fabric covering prevents it from disintegrating from being gnawed and slobbered on. The package said “because babies love to play with paper”, and it was only a couple of bucks, but what a hit!
My kids are 2 and 4 and still love that ball popper! Talk about bang for your buck!
